Oelmann Doing Well In Australia
Axing spurred import's goal blitz

BEING axed from the +Woden Valley first-grade side has sparked US import Derek Oelmann's amazing 11-goal run in just six matches and the striker is leading his team's charge to the finals.
+Derek Oelmann has gone on a scoring blitz since returning to the Capital Football Premier League side and he will attempt to find the back of the net again when Woden takes on Canberra Olympic on Sunday.
The 22-year-old failed to fire in his first four games for the club and was sent to bolster the club's junior ranks with the under-20s.
It meant he missed out on his team's previous clash with Olympic. But being dropped was a blessing in disguise with Oelmann rediscovering his goal-scoring form. It has coincided with Woden's golden run, winning seven of its past eight games.
Oelmann has bagged hat-tricks on two occasions this season and scored 18 goals in 17 games in his 2010 season for Upper Iowa University.
''I'm loving the culture difference compared to America,'' Oelmann said.
''I had a couple of summers with semi-professional [+Minnesota TwinStars FC] teams and trialed with [US division-two team] the Minnesota Stars [now +Minnesota United FC].
''Those two experiences were good for learning and I think it was good for me.''
Oelmann linked with Woden after he was recommended by a friend and club president John Helgeson praised the recruit.
''He's scored ever since [being dropped] for us in first grade, which was a bit of a wake-up call,'' Helgeson said.
Meanwhile, Belconnen United blasted three goals in 10 minutes to beat Canberra City at Hawker on Saturday.
